Mark Lowry truly hit the mark when he wrote the lyrics for Mary Did You Know, and now CeeLo Green has recorded this recent classic, as voiced in the video. I just love to dig behind the scenes and find out those little nuggets of information on the how, who and why a creative piece is accomplished! Mark took roughly over seven years to write the lyrics for Mary Did You Know, initially born when he was writing a Christmas play for his church.
I started thinking & wondering if Mary realized the power, authority & majesty that she cradled in her arms that first Christmas. I wondered if she realized those little hands were the same hands that scooped out oceans & formed rivers. I just tried to put into words the unfathomable. I started thinking of the questions I would have for her if I were to sit down & have coffee with Mary…you know, “What was it like raising God?” “…What did you know?” “…What didn’t you know?”. Over time, it (the song) just happened & I had the lyric.¹
Mark held on to the lyrics, bypassing attempts of musicians that composed music to accompany his lyrics, until he handed them over to Buddy Greene. Buddy composed the music in 30 minutes.
And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. Habakkuk 2:3 ESV
Mark Lowry knew from the time of inception the lyrics would be a song.¹ His faith led him to pass up drafts from other musicians for music written that would fit perfectly with the lyrics he cradled. God gave Mark Lowry a vision and he nurtured it until its appointed time. The verse in Habakkuk tells us that even if time passes slowly for us, God is moving and to be confident in this!
Lord, open our ears to hear your voice and make plain Your vision in our lives. Reveal Your plans for us and we will write them down to share with our families. Help us not to become weary in the journey but instead, nurture Your vision and cradle it until it comes to pass. Help to strengthen our Faith to move us forward in patience and confidence. We trust in You, Amen.
