The Big ‘R’—Resiliency!

We can make mistakes often the result of choice, we can be recipients of misfortune, we can fall victim to others poor judgment; but our response–our attitude, is a decision. Rather than “hang-in-there”, the certainty of conviction is what can take us through. The Apostle Paul understood resilience when he wrote:

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.¹

Although the Apostle Paul had many reasons to quit, he showed his convictions by bouncing back. He was imprisoned multiple times, received forty lashes less one five separate times, beaten by rods, stoned, in a shipwreck three times, suffered a recurring illness, persecuted, rejected and adrift at sea for 1-1/2 days. None-the-less, Paul knew the One he was serving and that his life had a purpose and pressed through adversity.

One valuable lesson I am perfecting in life is The Big ‘R’—Resiliency! It is a decision to look past current obstacles and circumstances and enjoy what opportunities are in the present. When I reflect on perceived downtrodden times in my past I now can see wasted opportunities. Did I see unexpected changes as roadblocks or redirection? Did I acknowledge that God might have intervened contrary to my plans for my well-being? Did I decide to retreat or advance?

If life finds you unemployed, it is a great time to organize your home or finally develop that moneymaking idea as a day job. This can be an extremely stimulating time. Think like an Entrepreneur! “Entrepreneurial thinking is a way of looking at and thinking about problems, but very much about doing something about problems”. ²

Suddenly single? What better time to focus on what you want from life! Take that pottery class, script a life plan or a petition† for your ideal mate —keep yourself focused on a goal! Off your feet for an extended period of time? Write a book, read a book, take an online course in something obscure you would not normally have time for. MIT and other sources offer free online interactive courses such as enrichment studies to nourish your creative spark!³

It’s a decision. It’s an opportunity. It’s a gift!

Dedicated to my daughter Christmas, my friends Carmel, Mary Jo, Marlaina, Sarah and my cousin Lisa for three days filled with laughter, joy, some silliness, youthful actions and childish play. A spontaneous day at the beach flipping and diving in the waves; the Log Flume- NEVER again; animated cheers at Temple vs. Villanova game; floating and synchronized dancing around the pool … all innocent, all good! Thank you!
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Prov 17:22
