The Magoo Factor

Keep plowing, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, get back on the bike…and one of my favorites, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” ~Winston Churchill. My clever neighbor labeled a recent life situation of mine to “The Magoo Factor”. After thinking on it, it is not quite bad a metaphor.

For the younger audience: Mr. Magoo is extremely nearsighted and plods through life unaware of the dangers and near catastrophes he is spared. Magoo is fixed on his destination and somehow, miraculously, he arrives at his goal no worse off than before. To the reader or the viewer, the portrayals of his dangers and catastrophes are more funny than frightening.

How different might our lives be if we fixed our eyes on Christ? I love the book of Isaiah—

“When you go through deep waters,
I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty,
you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression,
you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.” (Isa 43:2 NLT)

Magoo must have had faith! He knew not to focus on the problems but to fix on the promise.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28ESV)
