Faith, Focus, Finish!

Ironman for Life

David Daggett, Ironman for Life

Attorney David Daggett, accomplishing over 160 triathlons over 31 years including 21 Ironman finishes, has coined the phrase, “Ironman for Life”. Daggett is a true believer that if future generations do not turn out better than ours, then we have failed. In a triathlon, and in life, David shares his heart and compassion to inspire others to care and finish strong!

David shared an inspiring story on his blog following the recent Olympic Games. David wrote on Manteo Mitchell and the 4 x 400 meter relay on track. In a excerpt from his blog, David asks,

{How do we respond when the chips are down? Do we keep going or do simply give in. Manteo Mitchell gave us something to remember.”

United States’ Manteo Mitchell

To set the stage, Mitchell was running the lead off leg of a qualifying heat of the relay and was 200 meters into his leg. The team needed a strong leg from Mitchell to advance to the medal round. Their team had already been weakened by injuries.

Then, he heard something pop in his leg. He continued running and gave his team a good first leg. He later learned that he had snapped the fibula in his left leg. He still gave it his all which allowed his team to tie the fastest ever qualifying leg. The team, with his replacement, went on the win the silver medal in the finals.

How did he do it? He kept repeating to himself “Faith, Focus, Finish . . . Faith, Focus, Finish.” Those words struck me. Repeat each of them individually out loud to yourself. They are powerful, and provide a great lesson for persevering in unforeseen circumstances. “I just wanted to finish and do what I was called in to do.”

What are we called to do? Do we have a purpose greater than ourselves? When times get tough, where do we turn. The next time I’m in a predicament I’m going to try “Faith, Focus, Finish.”

Mitchell was there on crutches with a cast/boot to cheer his team on in finals. The lessons also include teamwork. None of us can do it alone, and the others need us to do our part. Don’t we all need the support of others?}*

The metaphor of the Christian Life to running a race is mentioned several times in the bible. Apostle Paul encourages Christians to focus, endure and finish strong in Hebrews 12: 1-3:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. – Heb 12: 1-3

I am thankful for men like David Daggett, Manteo Mitchell and the apostle Paul† who inspire us on to fight to good fight, keep the faith and finish strong!

†I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. – 2 Timothy 4: 7-8; the book of Timothy was written by the apostle Paul.

Update: David Daggett shared in response to this posting, “I truly believe I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me!” I’m inspired! – Denise
